Photo above circa 1900. The brickwork seems to be three inch, which dates the building as possibly early eighteenth century, so the earlier date of 1747 is a possibility.
Known as the Red Lion pre 1850, and afterwards as the Old Red Lion.
The Red Lion had its own brewery – because of the ubiquity of the name, it is very difficult to date the pub but it was known as the Red Lion circa 1780s, and kept by Daniel Walton. In 1727, there was a Red Lyon but the street name wasn’t recorded.
In 1873, landlord Thomas Collison was at the pub and probably included in the picture with his wife, Sarah, in apron with son Thomas. Far right is supposedly the landlord of the nearby Joiners (William Shipley). Please see photo above.
Thomas Collison would move to the Joiners circa 1905. He was listed as the brewer of the Red Lion from 1873 -1898. Artur Heighton followed as landlord and brewer, circa 1901.
Closed in 1912 under the compensation scheme, payments made to Arthur Heighton and F. W. Harris.
Old Red Lion would be just out of this photo of 43 and 41 Sanvey Gate, the reason for its inclusion is at no 43 during the 1880s is Mrs E Baxter TROTTER BOILER-lovley
