PEACOCK, SOUTHGATE

A Peacock is recorded as in Redcross Street in a 1500 list of Leicester alehouse.  Further records show a Peacock in Southgate Street sometimes referred to as the Old Peacock. (see Peacock 26 Southgate St)

Early 1850s map shows Redcross Street leading into Peacock Lane and the cathedral, cutting through is Southgate Street and top of Highcross Street.

Early newspaper records the Peacock as being close to the New Inn.  This photo (see above) of 18th century Southgate Street, shows the New Inn sign.
