TURKS HEAD, SOUTHGATE STREET

A Turks Head was recorded in 1726 recognisance orders.

In 1751, John Stanley was accused of assault in the Turks Head.

1772, Leicester Ref Lib, L647-94 R. Bone.

In the 1760s, the Turks Head was renowned for its sales of china.

In 1769, the LJ reported the Turks Head had 300 different ornamental figures that decorate chimney pieces for sale, marble chimney (fireplace) figures were much in demand.

Thought to be the Old Turks Head, Southgate Street.  The building was demolished circa 1965.

The Turks Head was the most likely name but other names including the Peacock from Southgate Street are an outside bet.  There was another Turks Head in Haymarket which could cause some confusion.
