PIG & WHISTLE, WATERLOO STREET

An 1830’s beerhouse after the 1830 act, which allowed any house holder to sell beer from their house for a fee of 2 guineas.

The only reference found in 1833 is when Charles Orton of the Pig & Whistle Waterloo Street was find 40/- plus costs condemned in mitigation by Moses Pegg for being open during divine service on Sunday.

Picture of Waterloo St (c1910) bears little resemblance of Waterloo Way today, the exact whereabouts of Pig & Whistle is not yet known
Later photo c1970 of Waterloo St opposite side to above pic (Dennis Calow)
