NEW ROAD INN, 201 WELFORD ROAD

In 1869, there was entertainment in the grounds of the New Road Inn beerhouse, also at the Victoria Pleasure gardens nearby (LJ).

Listed as New Inn, Knighton.  John Millis, beerhouse keeper in 1865, he was also the owner, he held beerhouse keepers’ meetings here January 1871.

By 1875 called the New Road Inn, (Mr Millis still landlord), when a LJ reported of two men being ejected from the beerhouse and causing damage and breaking windows.

There is some suggestion of a traveller’s inn in the vicinity during the 18th century (near the tollgate).

1890 Hannah Clarke held the licence for a short time before it reverted briefly back to John Mills the same year. Although some directories name Samuel Clarke as landlord,

Francis Preston then became landlord also in 1890. with Saul or Paul Preston 1891, Mary Ann Preston 1896, Samuel Preston 1899 and Ernest Preston 1915, looks a real family affair.

New Road Inn was purchased by LBM in 1927 from Annie Millis, together with 1,000 sq yards pat of Freemans Common.  The former beerhouse was now tenanted out, fully licensed.

Photo circa 2015.  The livery looks more like a supermarket, not sure how much longer it can survive.  Sold in 2018. Seems to be restricted hours Indian food.

  1. Used to be a great pre match pub at both tigers and foxes, many a pint in there.

  2. Wonderful pub. Derek used to be the landlord in its 1970’s heydays. Brilliant for after football training drinks and the lads from Victoria Sporting FC. Great atmosphere.
