JOHN WHITTLE BEER SHOP, WHARF STREET

In April 1832, a man named Whittle – the occupant of a new beer shop in Wharf Street – was fined 40/- for selling after time.  Later, in September 1837, it was again reported that John Whittle was the keeper of a notorious beer shop in Wharf Street.

At this point we do not yet know if the beerhouse had a name or sign, and  not all did for a time after the introduction of the 1830 Beer Act. It mattered not whether the premises were primarily for trade or domestic use, as long as two guineas were paid it was allowed to sell ale.
