BLACK HORSE, 4 CHECKETTS ROAD

This stood just inside Checketts Road at no. 4, on the corner of Claremont Street. The end of the building on the right of the  picture  is the Champion (later Flamingo) Loughborough Road. The Black Horse can be seen with the hanging Ind Coope sign, previously an All Saints House.  It closed on the 17th of November 1959, being compulsory purchased some time after for road widening.

In an 1813 directory, Sam Summers was listed as coal merchant and beer keeper, no. 4 Checketts Road.  He was also listed as brewing his own ale at the Black Lion (indicating either an error change of name).

A full list of licensees can be found in JR’s records below:

*Elizabeth Shipman remarried to become Elizabeth Storer.

  1. This an excellent insight into our Leicester City and County pubs etc. Brilliant work. I’m fascinated and enthralled and I am really enjoying finding out so much about the pubs I have known over the years. Thank you.

  2. Thanks for your kind comments Nick, they help to makes the project worthwhile.
