QUEEN’S HEAD – BRICK MOULD – QUEEN’S HEAD & BELL, 55 FRIAR LANE

Friar Lane first mentioned in 1391, near the site of the Grey Friars monastery. There are few records of these early inns and alehouses.

Stood on the site of Friar Lane Chapel, The chapel had been built  circa 1719 and extended during the next few years, again in 1790s. 

The Queen’s Head stood on the east side of the Chapel, moves were made to buy the ‘ancient hostelry the Queen’s Head’ around 1808, but was rebutted.

Eventually the Queen’s Head was put up for auction in 1849 together with brew house, stables, piggeries, cow house and two cottages in the large yard. In the occupation late of  Mrs. Spencer now of Joseph Johnson.

The hostelry was bought, demolished to make way for further extensions of the Chapel and school site.

Brick Mould

Some records relate to a Brick Mould circa 1739-1745.  This perhaps became the Queen’s Head, situated on the north west side.

Queen’s Head & Bell

Queen’s Head & Bell was recorded as in Friar Lane 1743.  Assumed to be one and the same property.
