GREAT NORTHERN, 1 HASTINGS ROAD/VICTORIA ROAD EAST

A mid to late Victorian pub –  address very often given as no. 84 Victoria Road East.

An article in the Leicester Town Crier on the 20th of January 1882, told of one James Joseph Bird, who was fined 9/6d, along with three others also charged with assault.  The assault took place in the Great Northern in ‘New Humberstone’ when a bricklayer was dragged about by his whiskers.  When the bricklayer’s wife intervened, she too was assaulted.

I have no idea what a boat was doing being transported by the Great Northern.
It looks like the RNLI charity boat but nevertheless a charming pic – Barry Lount

Love this photo from Steve Anderson, Great Northern on left half way down the street, offie on corner (right) typical late Victorian signage with brewery trade mark make this an atmospheric picture.

The Great Northern closed and was compulsory purchased in 1971 for new road and development.
