MANHATTAN, MANHATAN 34, REAL ALE CLASSROOM, 34-38 RUTLAND STREET

Opened by Chris Baker, ex-Time Bar manager, in what is now termed ‘the cultural quarter,’ close to the Curve theatre circa 2012-2013.  A modern drinking establishment, with a 1920s flavour.

The old Odeon cinema, now a hospitality venue, can be see in the background.

Manhattan opened with a classy feel, the hope being that the rest of the area – which has some remarkable Victorian architecture – could lure other enterprises, join up with the Arty Phoenix Theatre and thereby attract more people.  As of 2017, apart from the Curve and The Exchange there was little to attract.

It is now known as Manhattan34, more of a jazz bar and comedy club, closed suddenly July 2023, another bar to hit the economic downturn post covid?

The owners of the Real Ale bar the Classroom Allendale Rd Steve Tabbernor and Ian Martin took on the lease and opened Dec 2023.
